This is a versatile role that has emerged from start-ups, and which generally refers to the CEO's "right-hand man" or "second-in-command", or even an extension of the CEO's role, a position of trust to whom the CEO can delegate certain aspects or entrust strategic development projects. In practice, this translates into more or less broad operational scopes and, in terms of profiles, fairly varied career paths, but with some key fundamentals: very high calibre profiles, from excellent schools (business or engineering), with strong potential for development and an intellectual agility that makes them both adaptable and versatile. They are often free electrons within organisations, and can also coincide with Development Director or even Strategy Director / CSO roles.
