In practice, this translates into more or less broad operational scopes and, in terms of profiles, fairly varied career paths, but with some key fundamentals: very high calibre profiles, from excellent schools (business or engineering), with strong potential for development and an intellectual agility that makes them both adaptable and versatile. They are often free electrons within organisations, and can also coincide with Development Director or even Strategy Director / CSO roles.
