The salary of a chief data officer is significantly higher in large firms where data is a major tranformation concern. The chief data officer has a cross-cutting role with strong impact on IT and in some cases, a dedicated transversal business unit is created. The position is increasingly found in executive committees, and thereby salaries are increasing. In start-ups, these profiles can have a central role in the organization, with access to the company stocks or an incentive based on the turnover, and the base fixed salary is usally lower.
